Angels Babies of Cultural Diversity

Angels Supports Children from all Cultures

African American and Latino Babies are disproportionately represented in foster care. African Americans make up 5% of San Diego’s population, yet African American children make up 24% of the children placed in Angels homes. Hispanic Babies make up 32% of those placed with Angels families.

Children born to the youngest mothers (17 and younger) are more likely to be from a racial or ethnic minority group than children born to older moms. At the very top of the adoption hierarchy are white, blue-eyed, blond haired girls. At the very bottom of the hierarchy are African American boys. Fifty-six percent of children in foster care waiting to be adopted are African American.

American couples go to China and Romania to adopt babies, but there are plenty of American babies who need homes, and for many, permanent adoptive homes. Anyone interested in fostering and possibly adopting African American and Hispanic babies and toddlers are invited to learn more at the monthly orientation meetings. Angels respects the cultural factors that are a part of each child placed. Training classes teach the need for cultural sensitivity and suggestions are made to honor each child’s culture with art work, music and books that celebrate each child’s ethnicity.
